Expectations vs. Effort
Following up on our chat yesterday…
Often we set expectations of ourselves subconsciously. This can be good… but also bad. Our minds work relentlessly to make our expectations a reality, and if they don’t come to fruition we are often left lost, disappointed or frustrated. Especially when we don’t realize we set the expectation in the first place.
So take a moment and ask yourself - what expectations have you set in your life recently, whether consciously (like showing up for your FIT workouts each week), or subconsciously (things we don’t actively realize… like expecting to hit the same weight for squats you did a year ago).
Moving forward from that - once we realize what our expectations are, we need to take a look at our effort.
Let’s say we want to push more weight in the gym…
But…
we aren’t eating enough to sustain our workouts.
we aren’t following the progressive overload in the program.
we don’t prioritize sleep and/or recovery
What does this mean?
Well, we’re going to be disappointed with the outcome because our effort isn’t matching our expectations.
But now we have a great chance to move forward!
How?
We reflect and shift!
You can do two things here:
change your expectation to match the effort you are willing/able to putt out
change your amount of effort to match the expectation you have
Take this next week of training to see where your expectations are in regards to fitness, health and motivation. I’d love to hear about these thoughts next week on our zoom call!
